While throwing sticks for my dog, I noticed this cup like lichen and decided to bring it home to photograph.
It could almost be something from under the sea! π
Yes! Lichen fascinate me, the bridge between plant and animal.
Do you recall from 2015 the lovely ‘Authorised Artifact’ from Soddenham that I photographed. It contained a sample of lichen on the branch and ground! It is Xanthoria Polycarpa lichen which may well the same or similar to the lichen you photographed π
Ooops! I forgot the link…

Yes, thatβs it. Amazing that you could remember a post from that long ago.
And by chance I happened to watch a programme last night where I learned about the symbiotic relationship between fungi and algae which form lichen! I had up until then presumed lichen to be a species of plant in their own right. It came as quite a surprise to learn otherwise!
I was blown away when a few years ago I learned that when hundreds of thousands of years ago plants and animals took divergent evolutionary paths, fungi took a third!!!π³ Fungi are neither plant nor animal and life on earth is pretty much dependent on their existence! Amazing…ππ
During these tough times itβs good to ponder the wonders of nature πππππππΎπ¦©π¦₯π¦π¦ππ³
I wish Iβd seen that program and yes, much better to ponder small details of the natural world than the news.
A wonderful example! Lichens are endlessly fascinating!
They are! Wish I had more time to really study them, but I don’t.
It reminded me of an octopus!
Yes, an octopus tentacle.
