After 48 hours of rain, then snow, then rain again, a huge puddle formed on a path and made a lovely swimming spot for a Mallard couple.

The ice is melting on some spots in the river. In other places it is frozen solid and in others it’s free flowing. The water birds are happier now.

Seeing this strange duck reminded me of the same time and place last year, when I posted photos of Swedish Blue Ducks, new to the pond, including one Swedish Blue seemingly being courted by a Mallard (see below). Thus the title of this post.

Make Way for Ducklings

I was amused yesterday watching this mother duck and her nine ducklings. Contrary to popular belief, they just would not follow her. Make Way for Ducklings is a classic children’s book set in Boston, with statues in the Boston Public Garden. They are all lined up nicely there.
