Happy New Year! Turns out that I am crafts monogamous and the only photos I have been taking are reference photos such as this one in my striving to be a botanical artist. I’m very fond of the small worlds of lichen and moss especially on sticks. Doing this 1:1 in watercolor is difficult to say the least, but I’m trying.

So far, this has been my greatest hit in my perpetual journal (from 2021).

Somehow this tree, devoid of its bark, bare and raw seemed fitting to end the second year of the pandemic. But there is also the beauty of the abundant lichen and evergreen as well.

Happy New Year to all.

It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of lichen. Here’s a variety on a bench.

While throwing sticks for my dog, I noticed this cup like lichen and decided to bring it home to photograph.

A New Year

A New Year © Lynn Wiles 2021
And things have not become magically better. I don’t believe in New Year’s resolutions, but did decide about a month ago to start collecting random bits of nature and start a sketchbook with 15 minutes of drawing or painting a day. And in the last week, I have started exploring the macro capabilities of my newish camera. The in focus part of this lichen is less than 5 mm and I thought I could draw this life-size. Haha. Since we are all going to be stuck at home for the time being, wishing you all a Happy New and Creative Year. Even if it means bringing the outdoors inside.
