Being surrounded by signs of drought, I decided to go somewhere wet. So did the gulls.

The ice is melting on some spots in the river. In other places it is frozen solid and in others it’s free flowing. The water birds are happier now.

The icy river seems like an odd place to raise the young, but that is what these seagulls have done. Note one duck in there.
And with last night’s snow, we are officially at the snowiest winter in recorded history and records date back to 1872. Yippee.

On a too quick trip to Maine yesterday, we had lunch, walked on the beach for a few minutes, and then sadly had to turn around and go home. I did see a flock of seagulls flying low and coming in for a landing.

Put a Bird on It

18 birds on it, one in the air and two in the water. Seagulls and the cormorants. Reminding me of the Portlandia sketch Put a Bird on It. The latest heatwave ended with a bang last night, cooler temps all week will be a temptation for me to walk more than I should.

To celebrate Daylight Savings Time, we made plans to go to the sea. Since this happened two days after the most recent big storm, I wasn’t sure what we would find. The waves were bigger at this usually calm beach.

I have never seen quite so many sea creatures washed up. The seagulls couldn’t even eat them all. Photos of what we found will be coming up in the next few days.
It was nice having the sun set an hour later, but not nice waking up one hour earlier and yes, I’ve had a lot of tea.

Just came back from a walk by the river and thought I’d post a few of the bird shots from today, so I can get back to other things tomorrow. I seriously would like to know what that mystery bird is in the upper left and in today’s earlier post. Can’t say I’ve seen Buffleheads before. Update: The English Professor saved the day again. The mystery bird is a female red-breasted merganser.

A whole bunch of gulls of different types and ages hanging out on icy part of the river, while most of the river is not frozen. Below is a super crop of a baby gull walking on ice.

Rising & New Life

April 8, 2012 § 12 Comments

I watched seagulls rising above the river in a striped gray sky yesterday, and pondered whether to visit the cat shelter or not.

And I ended up bringing sweet Elsa home. Not fully prepared, I didn’t get her into a room of her own on time, so she has spent the last 12 hours under the couch, worrying us all greatly. I hope this was the right decision. The woman at the shelter told a story about her friend, who had a rabbit and a cat who had kittens. The kittens started hopping instead of walking.

Where Am I?
